Eric Reed Hears Public Safety Concerns from North Dallas Residents
Valley View residents discuss public safety and neighborhoodconcerns with DA candidate Eric Reed
DALLAS, TEXAS — Eric Reed, write-in candidate for Dallas County District Attorney, met Thursday, Sept. 10, with homeowners and residents of the Valley View Neighborhood Association in North Dallas to discuss public safety and other concerns affecting the community.
Residents told Reed they have been hearing recurring gunfire near Valley View Park and raised concerns about crime and other activity in and around the park, including homelessness, property values, loss of businesses and environmental conditions. Reed also discussed these issues with a Dallas City Council member and a representative working on emergency needs.
Crime statistics shared at the meeting lent context to some of the residents’ concerns. Although the overall numbers of reported offenses have fluctuated in the last five years, several categories have moved in the wrong direction since 2022, including aggravated assaults involving a weapon, vehicle theft and homicides.
“When residents tell you they are hearing gunfire near a neighborhood park, you take that seriously,” Reed said. “The statistics give us important context, but they don't tell us everything about what people are experiencing. Prosecutors need strong partnerships with law enforcement, community organizations and residents because effective public safety depends on recognizing problems early and bringing the right resources to bear.”
The discussion also addressed homelessness and the complications that arise when public safety, mental-health needs, substance use and housing instability intersect.
“Let me be clear: Being unhoused is not a crime, and the criminal justice system cannot solve homelessness,” Reed said. “At the same time, residents have a right to use their parks and neighborhoods safely. We have to distinguish between people who need services and conduct that threatens people or property, then respond appropriately.”
Reed also discussed his plans for the District Attorney’s Office and his more than 30 years of experience in criminal law as both a prosecutor and defense attorney in state, federal, tribal and military courts.
“The District Attorney has to understand what is happening at the neighborhood level as well as what the countywide numbers show,” Reed said. “As DA, I would make community engagement a regular part of how the office operates, so we are hearing directly from residents, understanding emerging problems and working with the appropriate partners to address their concerns.”
